8:30 AM at Sterling Forest Visitor’s Center upper lot. We’ll start by hiking the Bare Rock Trail to the Bare Rock vista. After a short break we will continue on the Bare Rock Trail to the West Valley Trail to view an abandoned beaver dam. From there we continue on the Fire Tower Trail to a rock scramble and then lunch enjoying a view of the valley. Next is an easy walk to the Sterling Forest Fire Tower. Drive east following Rt 301 (crossing Rt 9) for about 5 miles to Dennytown Rd, on right. Follow it south for 1.1 mi. to grass parking area on left side of road where the AT crosses (GPS 41.420759, -73.868793). We start on the Three Lakes Trail and follow it for about 2.5 miles to the Appalachian Trail (AT) for our return to the parking area. Meet 10:00 AM at Croton Gorge Park on Rt.129, Cortlandt, NY (GPS: Croton Gorge Park). Back in 1842, New York City received its first supply of fresh water and it all began here. Hear a brief history of the Old Croton Aqueduct and hike up to the top of the dam, once the second tallest man-made structure in the world. This is a great opportunity to learn a little history, take some great photos, and see something no other hike can provide. Picnic tables and rest room facilities are available. This small parking cutout with a right angle turn is on the east side of 9W at the trailhead for the Bobcat Trail (GPS 41.414925, -73.993714). Hike the Bobcat and Howell Trails down to the Stillman Spring Trail and then up and over to the Butter Hill Trail for a challenging climb to the summit of Storm King Mountain and then return on the Stillman, Bypass, Howell and Bobcat Trails. This spot holds only about 6 cars but there are 2 more pull-outs going east on Warwick Tpke, on the left, just before the house at 119 Warwick Tpke. The trail head is at the main parking lot. We will start on the Terrace Pond North then catch the Bearfort Ridge Trail going west and then north to the Ernest Walter Trail. Meet at 10:00 AM. Hike will start on the 179-year-old Old Croton Aqueduct which brought the first clean water to NYC. Meet at the the intersection of Gory Brook Road and Ridge Street in Sleepy Hollow (free on-street parking on Gory Brook Road). We will head north on the Aqueduct and view a weir, a 90-foot embankment carrying the aqueduct over the Pocantico River, remains of an old Keeper’s House, and possibly other attractions. Afterwards, you may wish to visit nearby Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and take a self-guided tour (free maps available at main entrance). 7:30 AM at the parking area 0.5 miles north of the Fort Montgomery Museum on Rt 9W (0.7 miles north of the Bear Mtn Traffic Circle). (Hikers are NOT allowed to leave cars in the museum lot.) Type 9W Parking, 708 Rt 9W, Highland Falls, NY 10928 into GPS. Look for orange Subaru. Hike along the Popolopen Gorge Trail with stream below, and then follow a challenging scrambling climb up exposed rock faces. The descent is steep and rocky and leads to a walk around Brook Lake before heading back to the parking lot. Optional additional mileage by walking over to Bear Mountain Zoo (depending on Covid) with spectacular views of the Hudson and a walk through the grounds of the Fort Montgomery museum.
