Sterling Forest’s New Trails

Meet at 9:00 AM at the parking lot located at the intersection of South Gate Road and Buttonwood Road, south of Tuxedo Lake coming from Route 17 and Sterling Mine Road (GPS 41.176111,-74.226889). Hike starts at 9:15 AM sharp going west on Red Back Trail to the new Hutchinson Trail going north. The Hutchinson intersects the new Munsee Eagle Trail. We then go east on the Munsee Eagle, then south, all the way to the Red Back and back to the parking lot. The loop is about 6.5 miles. This hike is moderate to strenuous. West Mountain

Meet at 9:00 AM at Anthony Wayne Recreation Area (1st parking lot from the Palisade Parkway Exit 17). Hike starts at 9:15AM sharp going north to the Anthony Wayne (W) and the start of the Fawn (R) trail to catch the Appalachian Trail after .6 mile. We stay on the A.T. for .7 mile. We make a right at the merge of the A.T. and the 1777 W and proceed on the A.T./77 for 0.1 mile. Then we continue on the 77 for 0.1 mile and make a right on the unmarked woods road, the Doodletown Bridle Path to the Fawn trail for .55 mile. Then we make a right on the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail all the way to the Timp-Torne trail on the right and back to Fawn and the parking lot. (GPS 41.328380,-73.987300) Note that hikers are NOT permitted to leave cars in the museum lot. We will hike Popolopen Gorge Trail to Queensboro Lake to Turkey Hill Pond, then backtrack to pick up T-T. Challenging scramble on T-T up to the Torne, and then down steep, rocky descent to loop around Brook Lake to 1777/79 back to cars.
